Santo Stefano del Cacco is a church in Rome , in the Rione Pigna , in the street of the same name.

Originally, the name of the church was Santo Stefano de Pinea , after the pine cone from Roman times that was found in this area and gave its name to Rione. It is now in the Cortile della Pigna in the Vatican. The popular name del Cacco comes from the corruption of Macaco (monkeys), for a baboon statue that was found near the portal of the church and is now in the Museo Gregoriano Egizio .

The origin of the church is very old and goes back to Pope Paschal I in the 9th century. His portrait was depicted in the apse mosaic, which was destroyed in 1607. In the 12th century the campanile , which is now integrated into the adjoining monastery, and the apse were built. Pope Pius IV left the church to Padri Silvestrini in 1563 for pastoral care . The church was fundamentally restored by the priests, just as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The interior consists of three naves ( basilica type ). It hides a fresco by Perino del Vaga depicting the Pietà . In the apse is the fresco of the Martyrdom of Saint Stephen by Cristoforo Casolani .
