Cristoforo Casolani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cristoforo Casolani (also called Cristofano , * around 1582 probably in Rome , † around 1629 Rome) was an Italian painter .

Life

He was probably born in Rome in 1582 as the son of Alessandro Casolani and his wife Aurelia Rustici (daughter of the painter Lorenzo Rustici (1512–1572)). His brother was the painter Ilario Casolani , who was six years his junior , and with whom he and his works were often confused. He received his first training from his father's teacher and friend, Cristoforo Roncalli (also called Pomarancio , 1552-1626). He was first mentioned in writing in 1601/02 with thirteen other people as an assistant to Pomarancio when he was working on the Cappella clementina in St. Peter's Basilica . From 1602 to 1605 he supported the Pomarancio in the work on frescoes in the church of San Silvestro in Capite . His main work was created from September 1602 to August 1609 in the church of Santa Maria ai Monti , where he designed the apse, the dome and the nave with frescoes. Further works were created in Rome in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle (works in the Cappella Rucellai ), Santa Maria in Via (Cappella della SS. Trinità: Giovanni Battista, Francesco, Giovanni Evangelista e la Maddalena ) and in Santo Stefano del Cacco ( Martirio di Santo Stefano , fresco).
