Saputara ( Gujarati : સાપુતારા) is a town with a population of around 3,000 in the extreme southeast of the Indian state of Gujarat . Under British rule , it was the only significant hill station in Gujarat well before the Wilson Hills, some 70 km further west .

location

Saputara is located in the forest, rain and fog rich mountain landscape of the Western Ghats approx. 250 km (driving distance) northeast of Mumbai and approx. 90 km north of Nashik at an altitude of almost 900 m above sea level. d. M. The border with the state of Maharashtra is only about 1 km southeast. The climate is rather temperate by Indian standards; Rainfalls are almost only in the monsoon months from June to October.

population

Approx. 97.5% of the population are Hindus (or better Bhil - Adivasi ) and about 1% each are Muslims and Christians; the rest goes to other faith communities. Of the almost 3,000 inhabitants, only around 1,000 are men, because many live and work in neighboring cities such as Nashik, Surat or in Mumbai.

economy

The place was dominated by agriculture for centuries. It was not until the summer presence of high-ranking British officers and civil servants that social life gradually changed. Today there are numerous hotels of all categories.

Attractions

Apart from a small museum for folk art of the Adivasi, the place offers no historical or culturally significant sights. However, the Indians enjoy the mild climate and the almost always green landscape and use the nearby small reservoirs for swimming or for excursions in rented boats.

Surroundings

  • Approx. 1 km south of the village is a small artists' village where handicrafts from the hill tribes are sold.
  • Hatgad Fort , which was probably built in the 17th century by the marathon leader Shivaji , but has since been badly ruined , is about 7 km south. From here there are views of the surrounding landscape.
