Sara Ullrika Watkins (born June 8, 1981 in Vista / California ) is an American fiddle player and singer-songwriter.

Watkins learned to play the fiddle in her childhood. In 1989 her older brother, the mandolinist Sean Watkins, founded the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek with her and Chris Thile . After their debut in Carlsbad / California, the group was a regular guest at bluegrass festivals in the 1990s. After two self-published albums ( Little Cowpoke , 1993, and Here to There , 1997), Alison Krauss released her album Nickel Creek in 2000 on the Sugar Hill label . Another album was created under the name Mutual Admiration Society with members of Nickel Creek as well as Glen Phillips and John Paul Jones , the bassist of Led Zeppelin .

The Nickel Creek group took a break from 2008 to 2014 . Watkins signed a solo deal with Nonsuch Records , and Jones produced her solo debut album Sara Watkins in 2009 . Her second solo album, Sun Mudnight Sun , was produced by Blake Mills in 2011 . In addition, she continued to perform with her brother under the name Watkins Family Hour .

After the reunification of Nickel Creek , the album A Dotted Line was created in 2014 , an album by Watkins Family Hour was released the following year. At New West Records , Watkins recorded Young in All the Wrong Ways . In 2018 she founded the group I'm with her with the singer-songwriters Aoife O'Donovan and Sarah Jarosz , which recorded their debut album See You Around in 2018 .
