Sarah Elizabeth Charles (* 1989 in Springfield, Massachusetts ) is an American jazz singer and songwriter .

Sarah Elizabeth Charles grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the age of six she received her first piano lessons from her grandmother; Her talent for singing was already evident in elementary school. After high school, she moved to New York City. There she studied at the New School and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She worked with Geri Allen , Cecil Bridgewater , George Cables, and Sheila Jordan . In 2012 she released her debut album Red with her quartet Scope , which includes drummer John Davis, pianist Jesse Elder and bassist Burniss Earl Travis . In 2015, Charles released a second album in the same constellation, Inner Dialogue , which Christian Scott produced alongside her. Her third album Free of Form was released in 2017. She plays with Jarrett Cherner in the duo Tone . She performed in Carnegie Hall , the Kennedy Center , at the cultural summit in Abu Dhabi as well as in the White House , the Bern International Jazz Festival and the Port-au-Prince Jazz Festival. She can also be heard on albums by Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah , Ajoyo, Jesse Fischer, George Cables, Hear Her Song , Martha Kato and Ben Rando.

At the New School she has a teaching position for gender aspects of music.
