Sarah Wollaston (2017)

Sarah Wollaston (born February 17, 1962 in Woking , Surrey ) is a member of the British House of Commons for the constituency of Totnes . She graduated from Guy's Hospital in London with a degree in medicine . She later became a member of the Conservatives and on August 4, 2009 in a primary election held for the first time by voters from the constituency of Totnes (Devon) as the Conservative candidate for the 2009 general election. All voters, not just conservative partisans, could participate in the primary election. She won the constituency in the 2010 general election, and was able to maintain it in the 2015 and 2017 elections .

During her political activities she focused on medical topics, for example the introduction of a minimum price for alcoholic beverages or problems of the NHS .

In February 2019, Wollaston and two other Conservative MPs left their party and became a member of a newly formed separate parliamentary group in the House of Commons, which later went by the name Change UK - The Independent Group . The reason for the formation of this association was dissatisfaction with the policy of Theresa May's government regarding the planned withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU . On August 15, 2019, Wollaston joined the Liberal Democrats , whose parliamentary group increased to 14 members. In a radio interview with the BBC, she stated that she wanted to "unequivocally support the UK to remain in the heart of Europe" and to combat an exit from the EU without a treaty ( no deal Brexit ), which would be "a disaster". In contrast, she now refused a by-election in terms of content, although she had previously campaigned for years that members of the lower house should absolutely stand for a by-election after a party change.
