The Sarcophagus Pond (English for sarcophagus pool ) is a frozen freshwater pool in East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Wright Valley , it is 250 m east-northeast of Dauphin Pond in the Labyrinth plain .
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Program who explored it between 2003 and 2004 gave it its descriptive name. It is named after a rock in the middle of the pool in the shape of a sarcophagus .
