Sarmiza Bilcescu-Alimănişteanu (born April 27, 1867 - † August 26, 1935 ) was a Romanian lawyer and the first woman to receive a doctorate in law from the Sorbonne .

Life

From 1884 Sarmiza Bilcescu studied law at the University of Paris (Sorbonne). There she did her doctorate in French with a dissertation on the legal situation of mothers (under the original title "De la condition légale de la mère"). She was the first female lawyer at the Paris University of Law. In 1891 it received approval for the Bar in Ilfov county in the region Wallachia . This made her the first female lawyer in Europe. However, she did not appear in court, but gave free legal assistance. Sarmiza married Constantin Alimănişteanu .

Later she dedicated herself exclusively to the "Society of Romanian Daughters" (Romanian: Societatea Domnişoarelor Române ), of which she was one of the founding members alongside Sabina Cantacuzino and Ana Haret . Here she developed a feminist theory in which she discussed new perspectives on women.
