Saskia AJ de Coster (* 1976 in Leuven ) is a Belgian writer.

Life

De Coster started writing early, winning a national writing competition at the age of eleven and the 1989 Junior Journalist competition . From 1994 to 1998 she studied Germanic languages at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and in 1999 did a master's degree in literature in Vancouver .

In 2000 her first work “Onder elkaar” was published . She is also active as a visual and video artist. In 2002 she made her debut novel with the novella "Vrije val" . In the same year she was included in the anthology "Mooie jonge honden: nieuw Vlaams literair talent" by the Dutch literary magazine De Brakke Hond .

De Coster works as a journalist for De Morgen , among others , and writes texts for theaters and bands. She is a member of the editorial board of the literary magazine DWB . With Arno Geens, she designed a zebra crossing in Hasselt in 2007 , entitled “Oversteekplaats voor huisdieren” , which contains text passages in black on the white stripes.

De Coster was awarded the Interuniversitaire Literaire Prijs by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . She was nominated for the BNG-Literatuurprijs 2006 and 2007 and the SABAMprijs 2008. For her novel Dit is van Mij she was nominated for the literature prize Gouden Uil .

On September 20, 2008, De Standaard published a letter to the editor from the former chairman of Boerenbond, Noël Devisch, criticizing a contribution by the incumbent chairman, Piet Vanthemsche, on meat production and consumption. De Coster later admitted that the letter was not written by Devisch, but by her. The contribution was meant as a joke and she did not assume that the letter to the editor would actually be attributed to Devisch. Devisch sued de Coster and De Standaard ended their collaboration with de Coster, who at the time was writing a monthly column for the newspaper.
