The stabilizing inner construction of a riding saddle is called a saddle tree . It was introduced by the Sarmatians , a nomadic people of Iranian origin.

The saddle tree is usually made of wood or fiberglass-reinforced plastic ; aluminum saddle trees are also common. In order to ensure the greatest possible fit on the horse's back , saddle trees are offered in many sizes and chamber widths or individually made. Plastic saddle trees are often reinforced with a gullet and are adjustable in width.
