Antonio Ignacio Cardinal Velasco García SDB (born January 17, 1929 in Acarigua , Venezuela , † July 6, 2003 in Caracas ) was Archbishop of Caracas from 1995 to 2003.

Life

Antonio Ignacio Velasco García joined the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Los Teques in 1944 and made profession in 1945 . He studied philosophy and theology at the Salesian College in Turin and Rome. He was ordained a priest in Rome on December 17, 1955 . He was rector of the Salesian seminars in Valera (1964–67), Los Teques (1967–72) and Valencia (1979–84). From 1972 to 1978 he was Provincial of the Salesians in Venezuela, after which he spent another year in Rome in 1978/79. In 1984 he was delegate for the Latin American-Pacific-Caribbean region at the XXII. General chapter of his order and then until 1989 member of the General Council of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

On October 23, 1989, he was named Titular Bishop of Utimmira by Pope John Paul II and appointed Vicar Apostolic of Puerto Ayacucho , Venezuela. The episcopal ordination donated him Pope John Paul II himself. Co- consecrators were the Deputy Head of the State Secretariat and later Cardinal, Giovanni Battista Re , and the Secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches , Archbishop Miroslaw Marusyn . In 1992 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of San Fernando de Apure in Venezuela. On May 27, 1995, he was named Archbishop of Caracas . As such, he acted in 1998 as the founder and first chancellor of the University of Santa Rosa de Lima in Caracas, which grew out of the archbishopric's seminary , which had existed since 1696 .

On February 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the title diaconia Santa Maria Domenica Mazzarello in the college of cardinals .

He died on July 6, 2003 in Caracas and was buried in Caracas Cathedral.
