Saturno (Cappello Romano) of an archbishop with elaborate embroidery made of gold wire and bouillon ( Philippi Collection )

As Saturno or Cappello romano (jokingly Don Camillo -Hat) refers to a common especially in Italy headgear Catholic priest. This hat is only worn with a cassock . It is completely round and has a wide brim that is reminiscent of the rings of Saturn .

Saturno is black for all clergymen with the exception of the Pope. Bishops wear a gold-green hat string with a green tassel, cardinals wear a gold- red hat string with a red tassel. The Pope's Saturno is red and decorated with gold embroidery. Before the Second Vatican Council there was also a white Saturno, worn by John XXIII. and Paul VI.

There is a summer and a winter Saturno. The former is a light straw hat, the winter saturno made of felt, beaver or hare hair.
