The decorative sword goby ( Nemateleotris decora ) is a species from the goby family . It lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Mauritius to New Caledonia , Samoa and the Ryūkyū Islands , at depths of 25 to 70 meters on reef slopes and at the base of outer reefs over rock and gravel floors.
The fish are nine centimeters long and have an elongated body with a long dorsal fin in two parts and a long anal fin . The anterior rays of the first dorsal fin are elongated like a flag.
Fin formula : dorsal 1 VI, dorsal 2 I / 27–32, anal I / 28–31.
Decorative sword gobies live in pairs and are monogamous . Mostly they stand a few meters above the ground in the current and catch their food consisting of zooplankton , especially crab larvae and copepods . In case of danger, the animals quickly retreat into a cave.
Like the other two members of the genus Nemateleotris , the decorative sword goby is caught for the purpose of keeping the aquarium . The fish in the aquarium are shy and should not be kept together with lively larger fish. After a while, only one pair of a larger group remains. Decorative sword gobies are short-lived and only live for two to three years.
