history
The old Norwegian name was Sviðurlandir or Sviðurland. This probably meant "land that has been cleaned by burning" ( slash and burn ). Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the name varied between Sourland, Souland and Saudland in Danish.
Until Notodden was founded, Sauland was a center in Aust-Telemark and was home to the district court. Until 1860 there was a separate stave church, which has since been torn down and replaced by the wooden church that stands today.
In 2016 Sauland had over 800 inhabitants and thus over half of all residents of the municipality.
Infrastructure
In the village there are grocery stores, gas stations, second-hand shops, bakeries, doctors, day-care centers, guest houses, banks, inns, a community office, a social security office, car repair shops and a shooting range.
