The Saure Wiese is a green area in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Bochum . It is located on Essener Strasse . The Ahbach flows through it.

During the Second World War one of the 12 forced labor camps of the Bochum Association was located here, out of a total of over 100 labor camps for the forced laborers in Bochum and Wattenscheid . There was also a plant's firing range and a gun emplacement here. 450 forced laborers, including those from Ukraine and Russia, were housed in the camp. The barracks were then briefly used for civilian purposes. A memorial has been located on the site of the former camp since 2012. The floor plan of a barracks is simulated by stone blocks and some information boards document the history of the place, the memorial site is complemented by the work of art "Loud Stille" by Marcus Kiel. Quotes from former forced laborers are cut out of rusty steel strips, the depressing quotes contrast with the idyllic park landscape.

From 1926 to 1973 the site served as a dump for industrial waste. Heavy metals , cyanides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) eventually reached the groundwater . The property is owned by RWE in Essen.

A renovation was carried out from 2007. 45,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil was replaced. 10,000 trees and shrubs were planted. A park of 65,000 square meters was created. The costs of 2 million euros were borne by the city and the country.

The Ahbach was renatured at the same time. The costs for a sewer amounted to 15 million euros, the redesign of the stream was 9 million euros.
