Sawa (born April 15, 1938 in Śniatycze near Zamość , Poland ; bourgeois Michał Hrycuniak ) has been Metropolitan of Warsaw and the whole of Poland of the Polish Orthodox Church since 1998 .

Life

Sawa was on September 27, 1964, Deacon , on March 6, 1966 Priest Mary Magdalene St. Church and in Warsaw on 25 November 1979 Bishop ordained. In 1970 he became an archimandrite . In 1979 he became associate professor of theology for the chair of dogmatics and moral theology at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw , of which he was vice-rector between 1984 and 1990. Sawa was bishop of Białystok and Danzig (1981-1998) and of Łódź and Poznan (1979-1981). On April 18, 1987, he became archbishop. From 1994 to 1998 he headed the new Orthodox Military Ordinary of the Polish Army. In 1996 he was appointed Brigadier General by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski , who awarded him the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2000. From 1980 to 1991 he was a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches . On May 12, 1998, he was elected head by the Council of Bishops of the Polish Orthodox Church.
