Life

Example of a Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF)

Paul Alexander Osterrieth was the son of August Alexander Osterrieth (1880–1971) and Clotilde Emmy Majer (1882–1956). He married Catherine Amsler on July 10, 1943 at the age of 27 in Lausanne during the Second World War . The couple had three children.

In 1944, Osterrieth, like his Swiss colleague André Rey (1906–1965), professor of psychology at the Institute for Educational Sciences at the University of Geneva , described a Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF) later named after them . It is a test to assess the ability of spatial visual construction and visual memory performance. Rey first presented the so-called complex figure test in 1941. Originally, the test was supposed to prove the effects of acquired brain lesions so that they could be differentiated from congenital learning disabilities. In 1944 Paul Alexander Osterrieth standardized the test and introduced a quantitative and qualitative evaluation method. This test was therefore also known as the ROCF Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test. The complex figure is referred to as figure A, a simplified test version as figure B. The test provides information on perception, strategy and planning ability, as well as visual memory and graphic reproduction ability. The test is neither an intelligence nor a development test, but it shows how clients deal with new, unexpected situations and is still popular today in career counseling.
