Sbirre
The term Sbirre ( Italian : sbirro , "spy") was used up until the 19th century , especially in the Papal States and the Republic of Venice , but also in other Italian states for the militarily organized bailiffs, henchmen , henchmen and security guards. They were often seen as corrupt, bribable and violent, so that the term Sbirre was also used as a pejorative term for members of the secret service or police officers from other countries.
