Scaphella junonia is a sea snail belonging to the genus Scaphella within the family of conch snails (Volutidae).
features
The spindle-shaped, fixed-shell housing is 115 mm long and 47 mm wide. There are 5 to 6 turns, which are convex and slightly shouldered. The mouth opening is long and elliptical and ends in a sloping and slightly outwardly turned siphon channel. The outer lip is thin above or below the suture and thickens slightly below. The parietal field has a very thin, shiny coating. The spindle is almost straight and is limited on the parietal side by a low longitudinal ridge, which is formed by the successive growth of the siphonal canal. The parietal field has four strong plicae. The first two turns of the sculpture consist of recessed spiral lines and very fine axial lines. The last two turns are smooth, with a few very fine longitudinal lines near the base. The embryonic turn is smoothly colored in brown.
The casings are dark ivory to cream-colored with brown spots in spiral rows. The spots are irregular, almost round or square. The spots of color under the suture on the last turn are greatest. The periostracum is brown and very thin.
Geographical distribution and habitat
It lives at depths of 3 to 126 m in the subtropical west Atlantic (depending on the subspecies) from North Carolina to Florida , and the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatán .
Taxonomy
The taxon was first mentioned in 1804 by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck as Voluta junonia by indication. Lamarck gave only one indication of Chemnitz, vol. 11, Plate 177, Fig. 1703-1704. The species is the type species of the genus Scaphella Swainson, 1832. The genus Scaphella is divided into three sub-genera by some authors. The species is currently divided into 5 subspecies.
