Scaphiophryne brevis is a species of amphibian in the family -mouthed (Microhylidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 26 millimeters. The top of the body is light olive gray with red and olive spots. There is a dark A-band between the eyes. There are a couple of large dark spots in the shoulder area. The tarsal and metatarsal cusps are yellowish white. The underside of the body is white, slightly olive-shaped, dotted and vermiculated. The forehead and legs are shorter than those of Scaphiophryne calcarata . The fingers are extremely short and very blunt. The back of the head is swollen. The interorbital space is as wide as an upper eyelid. The first finger is shorter than the second. The fourth finger is the shortest. The foot is no longer than the head. Only the first toe has a subarticular hump . The metatarsal cusp is longer than the first toe. The tarsometatarsal joint extends to the shoulder with the hind leg placed forward against the body. The skin is smooth but clearly puckered on the head and back of males.

Occurrence

Scaphiophryne brevis occurs in Madagascar in the lowlands of the south and southwest at altitudes of up to 800 meters. It lives in dry forest, thorn forest, coastal forest, bush savannah, agricultural land, rice fields and human settlements.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1896 by George Albert Boulenger as Calophrynus brevis . RMA Blommers-Schlösser and CP Blanc placed them in the genus Scaphiophryne in 1991 .

Scaphiophryne brevis is classified by the IUCN as "Least Concern" (safe).
