Scaphiophryne calcarata is an amphibian of the family -mouthed (Microhylidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 23 millimeters. The top of the body is dark brown, marbled gray and has a gray transverse band in front between the eyes. There is a triangular white spot in front of each eye. A white band runs from the eye to the arm and across the front. The top of the thighs are sometimes banded dark. The throat and chest are brown with white spots or white with blackish spots. The forehead is short, high and rounded. The canthus rostralis is blunt and the rein region slopes almost vertically and is not deepened. The interorbital space is slightly wider than an upper eyelid . The eardrum is invisible. The moderately long toes are connected at the base by a web of webs. The fingers and toes are pointed. The first finger is shorter than the second. Subarticular cusps and metatarsal cusps are strongly protruding. There is a large, flat hump just behind each tibiotarsal joint . The tibiotarsal joint extends to the shoulder with the hind leg placed forward against the body. The skin is smooth but clearly puckered on the head and back of males.

Occurrence

Scaphiophryne calcarata occurs in Madagascar in the northwest, west, southwest and extreme southeast at altitudes of 0 to 700 meters. It may be found in most of the arid areas in the west and south-west of Madagascar.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1895 by François Mocquard as Calophrynus calcaratus . RMA Blommers-Schlösser and CP Blanc placed them in the genus Scaphiophryne in 1991 .

Danger

Scaphiophryne calcarata is classified by the IUCN as “Least Concern” (not endangered).
