The family business Schäfer is represented by the corporate groups SSI Schäfer , Schäfer Werke and the Schäfer Shop with 8,000 employees in 60 countries.
history
In 1937 Fritz Schäfer registered a company in Burbach for the "factory production of all kinds of sheet metal goods". Together with his wife Bertha Alwine and their four sons Hans, Gerhard , Manfred and Theo, transport boxes, stove pipes, filling troughs and other sheet metal goods were manufactured for daily use.
The demand soon made the original production space in the basement of the house on the "Gerstenfeld" in Salchendorf too tight, which is why the company has been gradually expanded to include additional locations since 1948. After the death of the company's founder Fritz Schäfer in 1951, the four sons took over the management of the company. In 1953 the Lager-FIX-Kasten was created, which brought the entry into warehouse logistics .

As the IT unit of the SSI Schäfer Group, SSI Schäfer IT Solutions, based in Friesach near Graz and Giebelstadt, focuses on the development and implementation of the WAMAS logistics software and solutions from SAP EWM. The main activity of the subsidiary SSI Schäfer Automation GmbH, based in Graz, is modular order picking technology. The company plans, develops and manufactures small parts conveyor systems, automatic order picking systems and software.

Production sites are located on the " Pfannenberg " in Neunkirchen, once an iron ore mine, as well as in Betzdorf and Ledeč nad Sázavou in the Czech Republic .
