The Schöffel Sportbekleidung GmbH , 1804 in the Bavarian Schwabmünchen founded as a textile trade and led to this day there as a family owned company, is a European brand leaders in the field of functional Outdoorsport- and ski wear. The company made a name for itself in the 1980s with the innovative development of Gore-Tex products and is one of the few large clothing companies in Germany with its own tailor's shop. The collections from design to series production are developed at the headquarters. Schöffel sportswear is a wholly owned subsidiary of Schöffel GmbH & Co. KG , the parent company of the Schöffel group of companies .

history

The company was founded in 1804 by Georg Schöffel, who sold stockings, socks and night caps as a flying trader. The company later established itself in Schwabmünchen, where it is still based. The business remained family-owned and expanded over time. A clothing store was opened around 1950 and the production of children's and men's trousers started in 1961. From 1967 the focus on sportswear followed; In 1975 Schöffel became the market leader in hiking clothing. In 1983 the company started selling Gore-Tex products, which turned out to be a long-term success.

Joint ventures / franchising

In 2003 Schöffel entered into a joint venture with Lowa Sportschuhe , a manufacturer of hiking, ski and mountain boots . The joint venture Schöffel-Lowa Sportartikel GmbH & Co.KG operates a total of 33 Schöffel-Lowa stores, mostly run by franchise partners (28 in Germany, four in Austria, and one in Italy; as of October 2018).

Sponsorship

As a cooperation partner of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), the company has been equipping the alpine teams of the Alpine republic with racing and leisure suits since 2009 and, as the official partner of the Austrian Olympic Committee, provides the athletes and coaches participating in the winter games with the appropriate equipment. As a sponsor, the company also supports extreme mountaineers Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovits, among others .

criticism

Research by the campaign for clean clothing made it known in 2010 that several companies in the outdoor clothing industry - including Schöffel - paid employees in Asia and Central America only low wages despite the high profit margins. In addition, there were poor working conditions in the factories. As a result, the non-governmental organization established that “the image and reality of the outdoor industry are sometimes painfully divergent”. The entrepreneurial family around Peter Schöffel also invested 5 million euros in cum / ex deals , through which the German state lost billions through the reimbursement of taxes not paid at all.

Commitment to sustainability and in the social field

Schöffel responded to the criticism and in 2011 joined the Fair Wear Foundation , which is committed to monitoring working conditions in the manufacturing countries. For corporate Schöffel Code of Conduct thus came Code of Labor Practice added. Since the beginning of 2013, the company has also been a Bluesign system partner for the sustainable production of textiles. The company presented a sustainability report for 2017.
