history

Walking shoes from Lowa

Lorenz Wagner, the son of the shoemaker Johann Wagner from Jetzendorf (40 km north of Munich), founded the company Lowa ( Lo renz Wa gner) when he took over his parents' business in 1923 . Shortly before, his two brothers Hans and Adolf had set up their own business with the Hanwag brand in Vierkirchen and the Hochland brand in Weichs .

After Lorenz Wagner's death in 1953, the former apprentice (and now the founder's son-in-law) Sepp Lederer took over the company and, together with his wife Berti, made Lowa a successful ski boot manufacturer (Lowa Air) in the 1970s and 1980s .

In 1993, due to financial difficulties and succession problems, 90% of the company shares were sold to the Italian Tecnica group (in addition to Tecnica and Lowa, these now also include Nordica , Blizzard and Rollerblade ).

Werner Riethmann, who previously worked for the Swiss shoe company Raichle , has been managing director since 1992 and also became a co-owner in 1993 (then 10%, now 20%). In 2010 over two million pairs of shoes were sold for the first time. As of 2017, 60% of Lowa belong indirectly to the Italian Tecnica Group, 20% to the managing director Werner Riethmann and 20% to Renzo Castellani, the owner of the Lowa supplier Riko Sport from Italy.

In 2003 Lowa entered into a joint venture with Schöffel , a manufacturer of outdoor clothing . The joint venture Schöffel-Lowa Sportartikel GmbH & Co.KG operates a total of 33 Schöffel-Lowa stores, mostly run by franchise partners (28 in Germany, four in Austria, and one in Italy; as of October 2018).

Together with the other German manufacturers of special boots, Lowa is the supplier of the new combat boots for the Bundeswehr.
