Schönbrunn Palace, engraving by Michael Wening .

Schönbrunn is mentioned for the first time around 800 as "Prunna". A noble residence was already in existence in the 13th century. About the Thirty Years' War it is noted: "In 1632 several people died in Schönbrunn."

Schönbrunn Palace was built in 1688 . In 1861 the castle property , which was in dire need of renovation, was sold to Countess von Butler . She was very committed to the care of disabled people and for this purpose brought nuns of the Franciscan Sisters to Schönbrunn for the later Congregation of the Servants of Divine Providence (1911). From 1863 the castle was used as a home for the disabled and as a training center for young girls. Today the institution is supported by the Franziskuswerk Schönbrunn .
