Schützenmattweiher
The Schützenmattweiher (also Schützenhausweiher ), colloquially known as the Teuchelweiher , was an artificially created pond near the Schützenhaus in the city of Basel . The body of water, first mentioned in 1294, was used until it was drained in 1880 for water storage for wooden well water pipes called Teuchel .
history
1265 the city was with in cooperation Augustinian canons -Stift of the monastery of St. Leonhard , the first fountain machinery built. The Teuch line led directly from the outlet of the Dorenbach from the Allschwil forest to the Basel city wall in the Spalenvorstadt and from there to secondary lines; Excess water was drained into the Rhine via the inner city moat . In the corridor south of the Spalentor , a pond was created along the line to protect the Teuchel, which are to be stored wet, from dry cracks.
In 1428 the canons had a direct canal (the Herrengraben ) built to the Schützenmattweiher in order to supply the other wells in the city. After the Schützenmatte was put into operation as a new shooting range as early as 1498 , the construction of the Schützenhaus followed in 1561, which is still the headquarters of the E. Society of Fire Protection . Little by little, the pond was also used for fish farming and as a fire pond and ice pond .
From the demolition of the city fortifications, which began in 1860, the pond lost its importance and was filled in in 1880. Today a small park stands in its place; the street adjacent to the north has been officially called Weiherweg since 1872 .
