The Schützenmatte is divided into two areas: The eastern part consists of the Schützenmattpark, a public leisure and sports park with a large green meadow, surrounding trees and a restaurant (the pavilion that used to burn down). The western part includes the Schützenmatte stadium (home stadium of BSC Old Boys Basel ) and other sports fields for athletics , football and tennis . The two areas are separated by Brennerstrasse.

history

The use of the shooting mat for sporting activities dates back to the 15th century, when the area was used by the fire rifle society as a shooting range for rifle shooting. The shooting events also took on festive features over time, which is why the shooting mat developed into a traditional fairground. Among other things, the Federal Honor and Free Shooting took place there in 1827, the Federal Shooting Festival and the 400th anniversary of the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1844, the Federal Shooting Festival in 1879, the Federal Gymnastics Festival in 1886, the Federal Music Festival in 1909 and the 1912 the Federal Gymnastics Festival.

With the transfer of the Schützenmatte to the community in 1875/1876 and the construction of a new shooting range at the Allschwiler Weiher in 1899, the history of the Schützenmatte as a shooting range ended. The area was subsequently used for various sporting and other cultural purposes.

On July 26, 1913, the aviation pioneer Oskar Bider , coming from Milan, landed on the Schützenmatte after a stopover at the grid in Liestal .

reception

The writer Hermann Hesse grew up near the Schützenmatte and wrote about it:

"When I think about it, I feel as if everything precious, what I later saw with eyes and possessed with hands, and myself my art, were insignificant compared to the splendor of that meadow."
