A shooting range (Swiss shooting range ) refers to a shooting range for practice and competition shooting . It is used for sport shooting and is used by the hunters, the military, the police and other gun carriers, including private individuals, for training with all kinds of firearms .

Shooting ranges in the traditional sense are open-air areas ( shooting range in the true sense of the word ), as they have been used from time immemorial to practice with firearms in military and civil defense, modern designs are the converted shooting range and in particular the shooting range , primarily for small-caliber weapons and bow weapons. Shooting lane designated the time allotted for each shooter physical structure specifically, a shooting range comprises usually several shooting lanes next to each other. In the narrow sense is a shooting range of the part of the plant, between the shooter and to be taken target is located, and thus part of a firing point : That is, the entire surface for the shooter during the period. B. a competition can be used, including the area behind the shooter. The shooting range in its entirety then also includes the ancillary systems for storing weapons and ammunition, changing rooms, or (in the case of indoor spaces) extraction and air filter systems, as well as external protective and delimitation structures and the like.

history

Clay pigeon shooting range in Plaue Castle Park; the oldest preserved in the world

Firing ranges are as old as shooting. Structurally created shooting ranges were built in the rifle houses . In the Schlosspark Plaue there is a historic clay pigeon shooting range of Count Hans Adolf Erwein Max von Königsmarck , which dates from around 1900 and is said to be the oldest preserved in the world. This was decorated with larger than life animal sculptures.

The rear part of the shooting range on which the shooter stands is usually always covered, while at the shooting range a distinction can be made between open, partially covered and closed systems.

Shooting ranges or shooting ranges for firearms are mostly part of a shooting range . For competitions according to the sports regulations of the German Schützenbund , shooting ranges must meet various criteria (shooting range guidelines) and be officially approved by an official shooting range expert.

Only shooting with approved types of weapons and ammunition is permitted on the shooting range . At German championships at 10 m ( air rifle / air pistol / crossbow 10 m / running target 10 m ) competitions are only allowed on closed shooting ranges.

Shooting distances for the various disciplines are measured from the target mirror to a distance marker on the shooting range. The ring arrangement on a target is called a “mirror”. Shooting distances are 10, 15, 25, 30, 50, 100 and 300 meters with tight tolerances. The shooting ranges must be evenly and sufficiently illuminated and the individual ranges must be numbered consecutively.

A shooting range is completed with a bullet trap , which is attached behind the target. Depending on the shooting discipline, this consists of sand, earth or a metal housing. The task of the bullet trap is to absorb the kinetic energy of the projectile and to absorb it.

Safety precautions

Exposure to pollutants

air

The heavy metals such as antimony , lead , copper and mercury contained in the muzzle or pilot light in powder smoke can cause health problems and chronic diseases. Precautions must be taken, especially in closed systems, by means of sufficiently dimensioned, suitable and maintained as well as correctly placed suction systems. Lead-free ammunition is offered.

In the case of military shooting ranges or open shooting ranges for large-caliber weapons , additional safety measures are required by shooting clubs outside of competitive sport.

Numerous technical and organizational measures are used to ensure safety, as harmful ammunition is not infrequently used. In order to avoid injuries or even killing of those present, acoustic- optical warning devices are activated automatically as soon as an access to the target area is open. This stops the shooting so that no incoming people are hit or when a certain concentration of pollutants in the air in the shooting range is reached.

From an organizational point of view, the head or range officer reports “Sicherheit!” (“Range is clear!”) When all firearms are secured (bolt locked or completely opened or weapon completely unloaded). Only then can the staff go to the targets without risk in order to read them to record the hit.
