Pillar of shame

Shame column erected in 1616 in Frankfurt's Töngesgasse . The house of Vincent Fettmilch, the leader of the Fettmilch Uprising , used to stand here

A column of shame is a memorial that is not a reminder of fame and honor , but a person's shame . One could also speak of negative fame, which has been associated with the name of Herostratus since ancient times , who set fire to the temple of Artemis in Ephesus in order to become famous.

In 1747 the Catholic authorities in Lucerne sentenced the religious dissident Jakob Schmidlin ("Sulzigjoggeli") to death as a heretic . His yard was cremated and a stone column of shame was erected in its place. The inscription justifies: "Because of forbidden meetings and heretical teachings". In the meantime it has been replaced by an honorary monument.

A column of shame was also erected on the site of the house of the rebel Vinzenz Fettmilch in the Fettmilch revolt .

Former column of shame on the Aachen market square

As early as 1616, the Aachen city council erected a pillar of shame for Johann Kalkberner , the leader of the Protestant uprising during the Aachen religious unrest , on the city's market square , which was only removed by the French in 1793. It bore the inscription:

"Sic pereant / Qui hanc Rempublicama) / Et Sedem Regalem / Spretis Sacraeb) Caesareaec) Maiestatis / edictis / Evertere moliuntur
Ad / damnandam memoriam / Ioannis Kalckbernerd) / In ultimo tumultu Anno MDCXIe) / Hic excitato / Inter ha perduelles / Antesign ex decreto / D (ominorum) f) Subdelegatorumg) Sac (rae) h) Caes (areae) Maiest (atis) / Erigi iussa / III. Nonas Decembris anno MDCXVI

Translation : So perish those who seek to overthrow this community and this royal seat by despising the ordinances of the Holy Imperial Majesty. In the damnable memory of Johann Kalckberner, the leader of the last tumult, who had been conjured up between the enemies here in 1611, it was ordered that this pillar be erected on the 3rd day before the Nones of the Holy Imperial Majesty's emissaries December 1616. "

The most famous literary design of the erection of a column of shame (Italian colonna infame ) is the Storia della Colonna Infame by Alessandro Manzoni . A column of shame was also erected after the house of the robber Nikol List in Beutha was burned down . Life Lists is a template for Schiller's drama Die Räuber .

Pillar of abuse (or stake) is also used to describe pillory and other places of execution of honorary sentences .
