Scharenburg

The Scharenburg is located 1500 meters northeast of Lengde in Lower Saxony on the western steep bank of the Oker .

The word crowd has two meanings. It means either Elster or in the North Low German slope.

Castle complex

The castle complex was only of local importance with its location on an Okerfurt, it had a small inner castle square with an area of approx. 30 × 25 meters. The east side was destroyed by an earth slide and the castle will not have had a high wall. On the west side there is a wall with a length of 30 meters on a 2.15 meter wide ditch. The entrance to the castle is clearly visible. During cut excavations it was found that the interior consisted of a regularly built wall with small corner towers and in the center of the complex was the well, which is now filled up.

The castle was built between 1385 and 1390 by Hans von Schwichelt , the field captain of the Hildesheim bishop, who was supposed to secure its eastern border against Vienenburg and Schladen . The lifespan of the castle was short, as it was abandoned and fell into disrepair by the middle of the 15th century. The hill towering over the opposite eastern steep bank of the Oker bears the field name Wartberg , which indicates another border fortification.
