The scarlet net beetle ( Dictyoptera aurora ) is a beetle from the family of the red cap beetle (Lycidae).
features
The beetles are 8 to 13 millimeters long. They have conspicuously red, longitudinally grooved wings that appear to be almost square latticed due to the elevations in the grooves. The females have wider wings than the males. The rest of the body is dark brown to black, and the scutellum is also dark. Their very small head is usually hidden under the trapezoidal pronotum . This is red on the edge, in the middle it is dark. It is structured in such a way that a larger indentation can be seen in the middle and a smaller indentation in each corner. The antennae are strong and black except for the first three links, which are brownish. The second link is significantly shorter than the rest.
Occurrence
The animals are found throughout the Palearctic and also in North America . They live in forests and on the edge of the forest. They can be found at altitudes of around 1,500 meters.
Way of life
The adults are found either individually on umbellate flowers or under bark.
