The Scharteisensee , also called Scharteisen , is a lake in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Its shape resembles a glacial dead lake at the tongue basin . It has an almost round surface with a diameter of 330 to 375 meters. The lake was once the clearest lake in the Feldberg lake landscape with a visibility depth of 16 meters. For a long time the place Wittenhagen obtained drinking water from it, which was not treated for this purpose.
Due to agriculture, livestock farming and environmental sins, the water body was eutrophied during the GDR era . Even then, attempts were made to counteract this development with deep drainage for Zansen . The aim should be to divert the strongly eutrophic deep water in the Zansen. The desired success was not achieved because the deep drainage often clogged. Before this time, the Scharteisensee only drained above ground in the Zansen when the water level was high.
