The treasure trove of Środa Śląska (German Goldschatz von Neumarkt , also Neumarkter Schatz ) was found in 1985 and 1988 during excavation work in the town of Środa Śląska ( Neumarkt ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

Origin and description

Neumarkt, which was first mentioned in 1223, came to the Duchy of Breslau after the division of the Duchy of Silesia in 1248/51 . Whose Duke Heinrich VI. In 1327 it transferred as a fiefdom to the Bohemian King John of Luxembourg , who became sovereign of all of Silesia after the Treaty of Trenčín in 1335 . After his death in 1346 he was succeeded as King of Bohemia in 1347 by his son Charles IV.

The gold treasure found in Neumarkt in 1985 was discovered on a rubble site on the outskirts of Środa Śląska. The rubble came from demolished houses in Neumarkt's old town. Large parts of the treasure were stolen when they were found, but some could be retrieved. When further houses were demolished in 1988, another find was discovered that was probably only damaged during the excavation work.

The gold treasure consists of gold and silver coins that were in a 33 cm high clay jug, numerous gems and a crown. It is possible that the crown belonged to Charles IV's first wife, Blanca Margarete von Valois . All items were presumably pledged to the Neumarkt Jewish merchant Muscho by Charles IV, who had to raise money for his coronation ceremonies. Presumably he had left the city because of a plague epidemic and had previously buried the treasure under his houses. Individual parts are in the Środa Śląska Regional Museum.
