The exhibition mine Sunnpau is a copper mine in the Pongauer market town of St. Veit in Pongau in the area of Hochglockers. It is part of the range of exhibits in the Erz der Alpen Geopark and, together with the Seelacken Museum , is operated by the St. Veit Museum Association .
The mine
The Sunnpau mine is one of the oldest mines in Salzburg .
Archaeological excavations at the universities of Southampton and Innsbruck between 1985 and 1989 have found an early Bronze Age mining settlement from 1850 BC on the Klinglberg . Proven. In the mining operation, which was closed around 1800 , the grave of a 1100 to 1000 BC was found. BC man buried in the mountain with skeleton parts and grave goods. This grave was rebuilt in the mountain, the original finds can be seen in the Seelacken Museum.
The uppermost part of the mine is also known as the "Great Hall" . It is unique in Central Europe. Nowhere else was it possible to penetrate so far through the hard limestone into the mountain by means of primeval fire. Two graphitized crucibles from the "Great Hall" are also exhibited in the Seelacken Museum.
In Sunnpau you can see mining methods from prehistoric times as well as from the Middle Ages and modern times.
Found objects
In 1996, during the work to make the tunnels accessible, the grave of a 1000 to 1100 BC A miner buried in the mountain with grave goods, such as ceramic vessels, a bronze lance tip and a fox's head, were found. Such a burial in the mountain in the "Urnfield Age" is unique. A reconstruction can be seen in the mine, the original finds can be viewed in the sea lap museum.
In 2009 the current custodian and colleagues found a 1700 year old clay miner's lamp in a water-based paint.

The show mine is run by honorary members of the museum association. The funds are provided by the market town, the state of Salzburg and the federal government. There is also sponsorship from local businesses.
