The shovel- leaf cicada ( Asiraca clavicornis ) is a cicada from the family of the spur- leaf cicada (Delphacidae). It is the only representative of the Asiracinae subfamily in Europe.
features
The cicadas reach lengths of 3.6-3.8 mm (males) and 4.3-5.0 mm (females). Because of its exceptionally long antennae and the flattened widened anterior femora and tibia , the species is unmistakable in Europe. The anterior and middle tibia have a bright apical tip. The forewings are very hairy. The transparent wings have dark, dotted wing veins.
Occurrence
The cicada species is widespread in southern and central Europe. In the British Isles, it occurs in southern England. The species was first detected in Norway in 2009. In the south the distribution area extends to North Africa.
Way of life
The shovel-leaf cicada prefers sunny and dry habitats. The cicada species is often found around fallow land . The cicadas fly from April to September. The adults of the next generation overwinter. The females pierce their eggs into the stems of herbaceous plants. Little is known about the host plants of the cicadas, presumably sour grasses and sweet grasses . The cicada species is considered polyphagous .
