Dancing crowd at a foam party

A foam party is a celebratory event in which the dance floor is completely covered with foam with the help of light foam generators (also called foam cannons) and a soap solution .

The first modern foam parties took place in Ibiza as part of the fun tourism wave of the 1990s .

technology

A mixture of foam concentrate ( tenside ) with water in a ratio of approx. 1:50 is sprayed by a pump through a full cone nozzle (or also full circle nozzle) against a fine mesh (polyester perforated fabric). A strong air current, which must have the same direction as the liquid, pushes the solution through the mesh. This creates the foam on the outside of the net. Depending on the duration and area of the event, up to several hundred liters of foam concentrate can be foamed at a foam party. Modern foam cannons achieve foam outputs of over 100,000 l / min and can produce flat foam carpets up to 1.5 m high.

In the late 1990s, students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology demonstrated using household goods and dishwashing detergent on their own that a foam party can be organized with simple means.

Accidents and Risks

Since the entire surface of the body can come into contact with the soap solution at a foam party, it is essential to ensure that it is produced correctly - especially the correct ratio of foam liquid to water. Otherwise health impairments such as irritation to the skin, mucous membranes and the respiratory tract are to be feared. There is also a risk of slipping on the mostly slippery floors.

In July 2008, there was a fatal accident at a foam party. In a luxury hotel in Antalya , Turkey , three tourists died from a short circuit that was triggered when a foam cannon was knocked out.

Foam party process in Austria

Other safety deficiencies, such as slipping on condensed soap solution and a lack of security personnel, also pose dangers for foam party visitors. In 2006, an Austrian court sentenced three men in the so-called “foam party trial” to six months' conditional imprisonment and fines for negligent public endangerment resulting in death . In 2004, a 17-year-old slipped and fell at a foam party in Oggau in Burgenland . Then she suffocated under a mountain of foam. Among the convicts were the pool lender, the pool lender's supervisor and one of the two organizers of the event. The court based its judgment on the fact that the floor around the pool was too slippery and the stairs too unstable. Furthermore, there were not enough security personnel on site and the foam party was not approved by the responsible supervisory authority. The process caused a great regional sensation, even in the Burgenland state parliament .
