The Schauspielhaus Salzburg is the largest independent ensemble theater in Austria.

The rooms of the Elisabethbühne were built in 1932. A church complex is planned, but it will be closed after the "lower church" has been built. A cinema will initially be installed in this lower church, which will be in operation until the early 1940s. The church above will actually be built in the 1950s. The artistic director, formerly the opera singer of the Hamburg State Opera, Georges Müller, with his Kolping Theater, founded in 1958, moves to the former “Plainkino”. The theater group takes the name Elisabethbühne. What distinguishes them from other amateurs in the city of Salzburg: They play challenging pieces of world literature and have a handful of trained actors. The theater has not yet been organized, the first association will only be founded in February 1967. (Founding team: Pastor Wesenauer, Georges Müller, Norbert Amanshauser, Gerda de Vries, Georg Bartik, Wolfgang Mayr) The young Branko Samarovski, Georges, are among the actors and Peter Kern, Karl Kintsberger, Raimund Kranzer, Rosemarie Landsmann, Margit Lindbichler, Eva Weißkirchner, Hans Helmut Wimmer and Ingrid Zabransky.

In 1973, Georges Ourth from Luxembourg, actor and director at the Salzburg State Theater, took over the artistic direction.

The resettlement in the Salzburg district Nonntal took place in the 1995/1996 season. Since then, the theater has been located in the historic "Petersbrunnhof" building.

After the death of Georges Ourth, Renate Rustler-Ourth , a member of the ensemble since 1970 and later also director, took over the artistic direction; in 1998 she became the overall director. In 1996, Robert Pienz joined the artistic direction of the Schauspielhaus Salzburg as a director and realized numerous productions. Robert Pienz has been the managing director at the Schauspielhaus Salzburg since 2003. With the 2004/2005 season, the Elisabethbühne was renamed “Schauspielhaus Salzburg”.

The Schauspielhaus Salzburg is the largest independent theater in Austria with around 70 employees all year round, around 60,000 visitors annually and 10 to 14 in-house productions. The repertoire of the Salzburg theater spans antiquity through classical music to the present day. World premieres and theater for young audiences are a special focus. In general, the interest of the young generation is very important to the house, in addition to children's and youth productions, the house supports young people through various theater-pedagogical projects. In addition to the theater business, the Schauspielhaus Salzburg has its own drama school . As part of its training, the Schauspielhaus Salzburg endeavors to promote young artists.

Petersbrunnhof in Salzburg

The theater is located in the Petersbrunnhof in Salzburg, a former estate of the St. Peter monastery in the Salzburg district of Nonntal, directly under the fortress in the southern center of the city. This historic building, whose origins go back to the Middle Ages, was extensively renovated a few years ago by the State of Salzburg and equipped with the latest theater technology. The classic vault in the pillar foyer offers a wonderful ambience not only as a break room, but above all for readings, vernissages, exhibitions and atmospheric celebrations of all kinds. The theater restaurant "Nestroy" is located in the historical premises.

Actors like Mercedes Echerer , Harald Krassnitzer , Michaela Merten and Branko Samarovski emerged from the Schauspielhaus Salzburg .
