IDS Scheer AG was founded in 1984 by August-Wilhelm Scheer as a spin-off from the “Institute for Business Informatics” at Saarland University and looked after over 7,500 customers in over seventy countries with its own branches and partners. The ARIS architecture, a comprehensive framework for business process management developed by Scheer, formed the basis for leading software for business process management and consulting services.

Before the takeover by Software AG, IDS Scheer was Germany's third largest software manufacturer behind SAP and Software AG . In Germany IDS Scheer AG was among the top 10 IT service providers; in Central and Eastern Europe the company was one of the market leaders. IDS Scheer was listed in the TecDAX on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange until October 27, 2009 , making it one of the 110 top stock market stocks, also known as the DAX110.

On July 13, 2009, it was announced that Software AG had made a voluntary public takeover offer. On December 21, 2010, IDS Scheer was completely taken over by Software AG. After a restructuring within Software AG, the consulting area was continued as IDS Scheer Consulting GmbH.

On April 1, 2014, the acquisition of IDS Scheer Consulting GmbH by Scheer Group GmbH (now Scheer Holding GmbH) was announced. The founder, August-Wilhelm Scheer, bought back the German-speaking consulting part of his original company. It was followed by a reorganization of the company.

In March 2015, the merger of the existing Scheer Management GmbH with IDS Scheer Consulting to form Scheer GmbH was announced.

Scheer GmbH and its foreign branches currently have around 560 employees in five countries at 15 locations.
