Vertex posture is the name of a sculpture designed by Hannsjörg Voth on the vertex posture of the Main-Danube Canal . Its two wall-like parts border on the two banks of the canal where it passes the European watershed or the watershed between the Main flowing over the Rhine to the North Sea and the Danube flowing to the Black Sea . The artist Hannsjörg Voth won the competition for this large-scale sculpture against Max Bill and Erich Hauser, among others .

The two walls, made of white granite blocks, are aligned with each other with their 6 cm wide upper boundary surface, which disappears at the outer ends in the natural ground. The wall leading to the southern bank of the canal up to the service road along the bank is about 144 meters long. The large final section protruding from the embankment is 14 meters high on the service route and is interpreted as a white sail . On the north bank, next to the canal, there is a small bay with a still water that enlarges the gap to the north wall. In addition, there is a second path at the top of the embankment parallel to the northern service road. The northern wall ends in front of this path and is therefore only 3 meters high. It is 2 meters wide at the foot, so less pointed than the southern wall with a foot width of 3 meters (at 14 meters high). The picture opposite shows a view over both walls from the northern one. From the canal, only the end (the white sail ) of the southern wall can be seen.

The granite quarried in Aicha vorm Wald was bush hammered along the long sides of the walls so that tiny prisms reflect the light on the stone worked in this way. The granite wedges on the front facing the water, however, are left as rough as possible. Here the rough structure absorbs the light, which makes the stone appear as if a large shadow has fallen over it.
