Shemtov ibn Shaprut
Schemtow ibn Schaprut ( Schem Tob ben Isaak ibn Schaprut ) from Tudela was a Jewish doctor and scholar of the 14th century.
He is known as an apologist : He disputed with Pedro de Luna (later Pope Benedict XIII ) in Pamplona in 1375 and wrote (published in 1385) the ewen bochan ("touchstone"), a fictional dialogue between a Jew and a confessor of the Trinity , a compendium of Jewish apologetics . The first 9 chapters largely follow the milchamot of Jakob ben Reuben , the end is directed against Alfonso de Valladolid . Chapter 12 contains Hebrew translations of passages from the Gospel of Matthew and critical comments on them.
