Richard Gottheil

Richard James Horatio Gottheil (born October 13, 1862 in Manchester , † May 22, 1936 in New York ) was an American Semitist and professor of rabbinic literature .

Live and act

When he was eleven years old, his father, Rabbi Gustav Gottheil , got a job as assistant rabbi at the largest reform temple in New York (Temple Emanu-El), so the family moved to the USA. Gottheil completed his studies in both the USA and Europe. In 1886 he was awarded a PhD from the University of Leipzig on the basis of a philological edition study ( Mâr Eliâ of Ṣóbhâ: A treatise on Syriac grammar ). phil. PhD. In the same year Columbia University in New York appointed him professor of rabbinic literature. As a postcard from 1887 in the collection of the Museum Neustrelitz (Kulturquartier Mecklenburg-Strelitz) proves, it stood a. a. in contact with Jacob Hamburger , state rabbi of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz , based in (Old) Strelitz. From 1896 he was director of the Oriental Department of the New York Public Library .

Gottheil was one of the first American Zionists . In 1898 he was elected the first president of the Federation of American Zionists. He was a reform rabbi and a member of the Action Committee of the World Zionist Organization .

A close friendship developed between Gottheil and Theodor Herzl .
