Mediterranean shrimp ( Stenopus spinosus )

The shrimp (Stenopodidae) are a family in the suborder Stenopodidea. They stand out due to their striking, often white-red coloration and the large scissor legs, which are always held defensively forward. The large claws do not sit on the first of the five pairs of legs, as with most other decapods , but on the third. The first and second pairs of legs also have scissors, but much smaller ones. Male claw shrimp are smaller than the females.

Scissor shrimp live in pairs in caves and under ledges. They live in all tropical and subtropical seas.

Similar to the cleaner shrimp ( Lysmata ), they clean fish of parasites and dead skin. They first contact the fish customer with their long white antennae and start cleaning when the fish signals its readiness by standing still.

The banded scissors shrimp ( Stenopus hispidus ) was one of the first crustaceans to be imported into Europe for marine aquariums.
