Shear parameters
The shear parameters of a soil or rock are the following parameters for the shear resistance , i.e. for the resistance that a solid body opposes to a shear load or shear stress :
- the cohesion
- the angle of friction or its tangent .
They belong to the geotechnical parameters of soil mechanics and rock mechanics . Both can be used in shear tests . B. measure with a triaxial device or frame shear device .
The shear parameters are used for geotechnical verifications in the subsoil of structures and also for natural slopes in both loose and solid rock :
- for verifications in earth statics
- for proof of stability in geotechnical engineering including tunnel construction
- for the verification of the slope failure safety
- for proof against ground failure
etc.
The shear parameters are also the most important parameters in the Mohr-Coulomb breakage condition and other breakage criteria .
