Skipper's license (Austria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The official Austrian certificates of proficiency for navigating boats on inland waters and waterways are referred to as skipper's patent or captain's patent .

The most important waterway in Austria is the Danube .

These permits are not valid at sea: the corresponding Austrian permits are the certificates of competence for yachts .

Classification of patents

The Austrian patents are classified as follows:

  • The captain's patent is valid for ships of all sizes on waterways and other inland waters .
  • The lake & rivers captaincy license applies to ships of all sizes on inland waters, but not on waterways.
  • The skipper's license 20m applies to ships up to 20m in length on waterways and inland waterways. For passenger ships , this patent does not apply on waterways.
  • The skipper's license for 20m lakes & rivers is valid for ships up to 20m in length on inland waters, but not on waterways. This patent does not apply to passenger ships.
  • The skipper's license 10m applies to boats up to 10m in length on waterways and inland waters.
  • The skipper's license for 10m lakes & rivers is valid for boats up to 10m in length on inland waters, but not on waterways.
  • The skipper's license Raft applies to rafts on lakes and rivers, but not on waterways.

The first three of the above-mentioned patents are issued by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, the others by the state governments. The patents for waterways can only be filed in the states of Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Vienna, as the other federal states do not have any waterways. The raft patent can only be acquired in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol or Styria.

There are corresponding driving schools in many federal states.

Examination for skipper's license

The theoretical examination consists of a part on legal regulations, a nautical part and a part on technology. There is also a practical exam.

Restrictions

Separate provisions apply to Lake Constance and the Austrian Rhine. An application for a "holiday patent" must be submitted to the BH-Vorarlberg, so that one can also sail on Lake Constance with the Austrian skipper's license 10m for a maximum of 4 weeks a year.

International recognition

Holders of an Austrian certificate of competence can also receive an "International Certificate for Drivers of Sports Vehicles" from the authority that issued the patent.

Deprivation

The Vienna Water Police , responsible for the Danube from Mannswörth to Altenwörth , Danube Canal , New and Old Danube and other bodies of water in and around Vienna, revokes around 5 to 6 skipper's licenses every year due to alcoholism. Similar to road traffic, there is a limit of 0.5 per mille blood alcohol content for captains and 0.1 per mille for professional skippers.
