The tails (Uropeltidae) are a family of snakes found in Sri Lanka , the Indian subcontinent and in Southeast Asia .

features

Shield tails are small animals that live underground and only grow to about half a meter in length. Many species are very colorful and have a metallic shimmer. The head, which is unusually mobile due to its special head joints, is wedge-shaped, in adaptation to the digging way of life, and the mouth is below. The skull is unusually stable. In all species, with the exception of the two Platyplectrurus species, the eyes are reduced and covered with scales. The body is round in cross-section and covered with relatively large scales. The abdominal rails are small. The tail is short and ends blunt. It often appears as if it has been cut off at an angle from above. The tail end is reinforced by a large, smooth or one or three-pointed scale, or by several thorny or keeled scales. The tail obviously serves as an abutment when digging in the ground. As a primitive snake family, the tails still have rudiments of the pelvic girdle , but no anal spurs . The left lung is also missing.

Tails mainly feed on earthworms, but also prey on small, ground-dwelling lizards ( skinks ). They are ovoviviparous , which means they give birth to live young who are already quite large at birth. Two to ten young snakes are born per litter.
