The Schiller memorial in honor of the poet Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) is located on Schillerplatz in front of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City .
description
The bronze statue of Schiller stands on a granite pedestal with a pedestal, at the corners of which are four monumental seated figures of the four ages from Schiller's poem The Song of the Bell . The back shows the child on the mother's lap and the old man, the front shows the young man on the move, and the iron caster. Between these figures, allegorical figures with a corresponding medallion picture are attached in the base on each side, symbolizing genius, poetry, science and the love of home.
history
Like many other Viennese monuments, this monument was financed by donations, drafts were obtained through an artist competition and coordinated by a committee. The poet Anastasius Grün and the writer Ludwig August Frankl von Hochwart were very involved. It was decided in favor of a bronze statue designed by Johannes Schilling in a strictly historical style, which was created in 1875/1876 by Franz Pönninger and Josef Rölich in the kk art foundry .
Friedrich Schiller was the first artist to whom a representative monument was dedicated in a public square in Vienna. Until then, this was only common for rulers or generals.
The unveiling took place on November 10, 1876, and was used as the occasion for the award of the title "Knight of Hochwart" to Frankl . Anastasius Grün also received an award on Schillerplatz - a memorial was dedicated to him in a corner of the park in 1891.
In 1900, a Goethe monument was erected opposite the Schiller monument within sight on the Opernring .
