The Schiller Monument in Gustav Mahler Park (2014)

The Hamburg monument to Friedrich Schiller was unveiled in 1866 and has stood in Gustav Mahler Park on Dammtordamm since 1958 . It is designated as a cultural monument with the object ID 12568.

description

The poet stands in a traveling cloak as a life-size bronze sculpture on a granite plinth, his right hand is slightly stretched out, and in the left he is holding a book. Four allegorical female figures surround the plinth, which are much smaller in scale than the figure of the poet. They are intended to indicate the poet's diverse talents and activities:

  • Euterpe , the muse of poetry and music, shown here with a lyre
  • Calliope , the muse of epic poetry and philosophy, depicted here with a book
  • Klio , the muse of hero poetry and history
  • Melpomene , the muse of tragic poetry

The whole ensemble is framed by a metal grille.

history

In the course of the Schiller celebrations for the poet's hundredth birthday in 1859, the desire arose to realize a Schiller monument in Hamburg. Although Schiller is said to never have been to Hamburg, his Don Karlos was premiered here in 1787.

After a tender by the Schiller Association, the Hamburg artist Julius Lippelt was commissioned to erect the monument in 1860 . However, Lippelt was unable to complete his work because he died of tuberculosis in 1864. The Silesian sculptor Carl Börner completed the work. It was cast in the Hamburg foundry by Georg Schultz, so that it could be unveiled on May 10, 1866. The location was originally in front of the art gallery at Ferdinandstor.

In 1923 the Schiller monument was added to the Hamburg list of monuments as No. 31. Today it stands in Gustav Mahler Park on Dammtordamm, where it was moved in 1958.

restoration

A comprehensive restoration took place from 2007 to 2008. The sandstone foundation and the inner framework had to be renewed. In addition, the bronze figures were damaged by the pollutants and dirt particles in the air. The funds required for the restoration, around € 120,000, were raised by the citizens of Hamburg and foundations.
