Notostira elongata

Notostira elongata is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 6.0 to 8.7 millimeters long. The species of the genus Notostira have an elongated body with an elongated groove between the compound eyes . Males and females differ in appearance ( sexual dimorphism ). Males are black on top and have yellowish-green margins. The females are much paler in color and resemble Stenodema laevigata . Their pronotum , however, is smooth and not punctured, and the first antennae and the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are densely covered in dark hair. Notostira erratica is extremely similar to the species. The males are fully winged (macropter), the females have slightly shortened (brachyptere) wings. The basic body color of the two generations corresponds to the season of the inhabited habitats. The summer generation has a predominantly yellowish-green basic color, the autumn generation is gray-brown and reddish.

Occurrence and habitat

The kind is distributed in Europe, North Africa and east to Siberia and China. In Germany the species is widespread, in Austria it is common. It is common. A great number of different, moderately moist to dry, sunny to partially shaded habitats are colonized. But they are mainly found in open, sunny places with soils with a higher nutrient content, for example on roadsides, ruderal areas, fertilized meadows or also in grain fields.

Way of life

The bugs live on grasses, preferably at Agropyron , fescue ( Festuca ), bluegrasses ( Poa ), Zwenken ( Brachypodium ), holcus ( Holcus ) and Agrostis ( Agrostis ). But they have also been found on meadow foxtail ( Alopecurus pratensis ) and common ball grass ( Dactylis glomerata ). The species certainly lives on other sweet grasses (Poaceae). The first generation bugs mainly suckle on the stalks and leaves of the plants, the second generation also on the ears.

The females lay their eggs in groups in the gap between the leaf sheath and the stalk of the grass. It is possible that the females of the summer generation lay their eggs on the ears, but this has not been investigated. Only the males are able to fly. Only the mated females overwinter in dry litter. Two generations are trained each year. The females lay their eggs in April and May, the adults of the summer generation appear from June and July. These in turn lay their eggs in July and August, from which the adult bugs of the autumn generation develop by August. After mating, the males die by November.
