features

The 16 cm long Schiller kingfisher is similar to the European kingfisher . It is characterized by a black beak, an ultramarine-blue head, dark blue upper sides of the wings, a white throat and a chest, a belly and undersides of the wings in reddish color.

Occurrence

The iris kingfisher is found in the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa. Two subspecies are known: The range of Alcedo q. quadribrachys extends in West Africa from Senegal to Nigeria , while the occurrence of Alcedo q. guentheri extends from southwest Nigeria to Lake Victoria in the east and south to Zambia and northern Angola .

Behavior and food

The Schillere Kingfisher is a hide hunter. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
