Schiller House in Cheb

The Schillerhaus in Cheb (German Eger ), a town in the Czech Republic in Okres Cheb (Eger district), was built in 1673. The building on the south-eastern market square, directly to the right of the town hall , has been a protected cultural monument since 1988.

history

The house with a coat of arms under the middle windows of the first floor was initially named Metternichhaus after its builder . After the visit of the poet Friedrich Schiller to Eger in 1791 for a drinking cure in Franzensbad and historical studies of the life of Wallenstein , the building was the guest house Zum golden Hirsch , after which it was also known as the Schillerhaus . The composer Wenzel Heinrich Veit lived here from 1854 to 1862 . The memorial plaques for Schiller and Veit next to the two central windows on the first floor were removed and destroyed during renovation work in 1962.
